After long and careful thought, I’ve now decided to announce my retirement from top-level professional cycle racing.
For certain reasons, this decision has been quite hard, because I feel I still owe a debt of gratitude to Team Infinite for giving me an opportunity to do what I love the most in life – race my bike. When I first came to Thailand, bike racing was not really on my mind because I never dreamed that the right sort of opportunity would ever open up for me again. I can only thank everyone at Team Infinite for giving me that opportunity and helping me achieve many great success. I’m glad to say that my association with Team Infinite will not end completely. I’ll be fulfilling an Ambassador role going forward, engaging with clients and helping to further build team profile. Importantly, this role will also allow me to stay connected with many great friends within the Team that I have developed over the years.
This decision feels well timed, because I now have the opportunity to spend more quality time with my wife and to see my young children grow up. I’m also looking forward to further developing my coaching career, as I get a lot of satisfaction from helping riders of all abilities reach their full potential. In fact, my own personal sporting activities won’t cease entirely at this point, as I still feel fit and healthy. I’ll continue to participate in various types of endurance sport, mainly for just fun. In the end, I will focus on the things in life that make me most happy – spending time with family and good friends on and off the bike.
